The Young Mothers project provides a specialised tailored programme specific to the individual needs of young mums and young mums to be in Luton.
The Young Mothers Engagement Specialist provides guidance, support and advice on a range of issues and difficulties that young mothers may face daily, including housing; knowing what benefits they are entitled to; going back to education; finding work. As well as this; the Young Mothers’ worker also supports individuals that are experiencing abusive relationships and will be an advocate for them during meetings with other professionals including CP (Child Protection); CIN (Child in Need); TAF (Team around the Family) and any other meeting where they may need additional emotional support.
The Young Mothers worker also refers the young mums on to other agencies that can provide additional support. Working closely with Early Help; IDVA (Independent Domestic Violence Advisor) and Health Visitors; the Young Mother’s Worker aims to provide the highest quality of support in order to provide opportunities for young mums to lay a firm foundation to build on and to raise their aspirations.
We also have fun activities including day’s out with young parents. We have already visited a couple of farms and a Zoo; with future trips to the Seaside, splash park and a Safari Park.

CASE STUDY 1
I have been working with a young mum for 7 months. They have had a range of issues where support was needed. The Young Mum self-referred herself to me as she was having housing issues. Her landlord (Private Landlord) had given her notice to move out of the accommodation due to selling the property. This left the young mum and her children homeless; with my support the young mum presented herself to the council; where she was initially put up in a hotel. The young mum required support with liaising with housing and benefits; as well as to vent off her frustrations with her situation; having a young baby and a small child in a small room with no cooking facilities to provide her family with a healthy diet was proving difficult.
The young mum was eventually provided with temporary accommodation of a two bedroom flat. The young mum didn’t have a washing machine and required other items including blinds; rugs and toys for her children. I completed Eat Sleep Play referral for the young mum and within 3 working days, she received a new washing machine and soon after an Argos gift card to purchase other items that she was in need of.
The young mum is now settled and is now stable with her children both happy and doing well.
